2013 is off to a bad start regarding roadway fatalities in Nebraska.

Nebraska Highway Safety Department Administrator Fred Zwonechek says those statistics are from January 1st through February 24th. Out of the 39 highway deaths 31 happened in rural areas. He says early figures show that 65-percent of those killed were not wearing seat belts.


As of February 24th, there have been 39 deaths on Nebraska roads this year. Office of Highway Safety Administrator Fred Zwonechek says highway deaths are at a four year high.

Zwonechek; "all contributed."

Thirty-one deaths occurred in rural areas of the state and Zwonechek says that 65-percent of those killed were not wearing safety belts.


From January 1st through February 24th, 39 people were killed on Nebraska roadways. Office of Highway Safety Administrator Fred Zwonechek says a majority of those killed were not wearing seat belts.

Zwonechek; "of the crash."

Zwonechek says the greatest increase occurred in rural areas where fatalities have nearly doubled.
