Former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel has been confirmed as Secretary of Defense.
Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, notes that Hagel is the first former enlisted man and first Vietnam veteran to serve as Secretary of Defense. Levin tells colleagues that background gives Hagel an invaluable perspective. . .

The Senate voted 58-to-41 to confirm Hagel as Defense Secretary.
Senator Johanns voted for Hagel. Senator Fischer voted against.
He succeeds Leon Panetta.

After fellow Republicans ended their filibuster of his confirmation, Hagel was confirmed on a 58-to-41 vote.
