U-S Beef Consumption & Exports Down In 2013

Nebraskans and those across the country will be eating less meat this year and paying record prices for it.

Nebraskans and those across the country will be eating less meat this year and paying record prices for it. That according to USDA Livestock Analyst Shale Shagam who says the average person will consume just over 200 pounds of red meat and poultry in 2013.

That is the lowest meat consumption rate since 1991. Shagam says they are also keeping a close tab on production and early estimates show that the U-S will export 11% less beef this year while imports increase 16%.

Expect higher prices in the meat case at Nebraska supermarkets this year. USDA Livestock Analyst Shale Shagam says beef and poultry prices will go up.

With higher prices consumption will be down. USDA estimates that the average American will consume about 200 pounds of beef, poultry and pork this year, the lowest amount of meat consumption since 1991. USDA is also predicting an 11% drop in beef exports this year but imports will jump 16%.


There will be less beef exported this year. USDA Livestock Analyst Shale Shagam says they are looking at an 11% drop in exports.

There will be less meat and record prices. Shagam says beef consumption will be the lowest in 22 years. Poultry and pork consumption will increase.
