If LB 439 is approved smokers will be paying a lot more for a pack of cigarettes. Grand Island State Senator Mike Gloor introduced the bill that would increase the state tax 72-cents per pack of cigarettes. He says that money would then go to help fund health care reform.

The state tax on a pack of cigarettes would total $1.36. He says the tax on tobacco has not gone up for ten years and he is seeing a lot of support for the bill. Senator Gloor says it may also be the incentive for many Nebraskans to kick the habit.

Senator Gloor introduced a bill two years ago that would have brought the state tax to $1.99 a pack total. He says the extra money would go to cover increased costs to the state due to health care reform.
